Two transgender politicians have been elected to Scotland’s Parliament, including one representing the region where J.K. Rowling lives.
Dr. Q Manivannan ( Money-Vaan-naan) and Iris Duane, both members of the Scottish Green Party, became the newest transgender MSPs after last week’s election. Manivannan will represent Edinburgh and Lothians East, while Duane will represent Glasgow. During their victory speech, Manivannan said, “This is what diversity looks like in power…My name is Dr. Q Manivannan. I am a transgender Tamil immigrant, my pronouns are they/them.”
Manivannan, who moved from Tamil Nadu, India in 2021, was elected while on a temporary student and graduate visa. Rowling, however, showed her support for anti-trans politician Dr. Pam Gosal, who lost her re-election bid.
