Florida’s First Out State Senator Shevrin Jones Launches Historic Bid for U.S. Congress

Out Florida lawmaker Shevrin Jones has officially entered the race for Congress in South Florida’s open 24th Congressional District seat. The Miami Gardens Democrat will launch his campaign Tuesday in Pembroke Pines. In his recent social media video, Jones said, “I shared that I would not be seeking re-election to the Florida Senate. I also told you that when I was ready to share what comes next, you will hear directly from me…that time has come, and I want you all to meet me where it all started.”

The seat opened after longtime Democratic U.S. Representative Frederica Wilson announced her retirement a few days ago. Jones made history in 2020 when he became Florida’s first openly gay state Senator. If elected to Congress, he would become the first openly gay Congressman elected in Florida. The race is expected to draw strong competition. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert has also announced plans to run. Still, Democrats are heavily favored to keep the deep-blue district.

Jones has become one of Florida’s leading voices for LGBTQ+ rights, especially during Republican Governor Ron DeSantis’ push to roll back queer protections. Jones has also served as chair of the Miami-Dade Democratic Party and is widely seen as a rising figure in Florida Democratic politics.
