The charity Fighting With Pride is sounding the alarm, warning that hundreds of aging LGBTQ+ veterans could miss the deadline for the UK’s Financial Recognition plan. The fund was established to compensate former personnel who were fired, stripped of medals, or forced out under the military’s pre-2000 ban on queer service members.
With the application window set to close this December, advocates say a staggering number of eligible veterans have yet to step forward. Organizers explain that the brutal, invasive interrogations and court-martials many faced left them deeply traumatized. As a result, many completely severed ties with both military and LGBTQ+ networks, leaving them isolated and entirely unaware that compensation exists.
The Ministry of Defence says it is working with veteran organizations to locate those affected. Activists are urging the public to help spread the word before time officially runs out.
