The Stonewall National Museum, Archives and Library (1300 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale) present “Bear Witness Exhibition” with the opening reception today at 6pm. Join them for an abridged history of Bear identity and culture in the LGBTQ+ world — including a few things you may not know. The term “Bear” first appeared in a gay context in 1966 Los Angeles, long before it became widely recognized. Over the next two decades, scattered pockets of community slowly found one another, weaving together a culture that had existed quietly in bars, backrooms, and friendships. What emerged was a vibrant, affirming space where people who once felt isolated could finally see themselves reflected and celebrated. Go and learn how those early threads grew into a powerful movement of belonging, visibility, and pride. The exhibition opens Aug. 1 and remains on view through Aug. 31. An opening reception will be held Friday, July 31, at 6 p.m. at Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library, 1300 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. The NSU Art Museum presents “Creativity Exploration Celestial Collage” from noon to 1:30pm. Inspired by the dreamlike and intuitive world of Eiah Haie, where symbolism, layered imagery, and imagination converge, participants will explore themes of inner worlds, memory, and wonder through collage, colored pencil, and mixed media. Through thoughtful layering and mindful making, participants will create poetic visual compositions that invite curiosity, reflection, and personal meaning. Alyson Thomas and Miguel Leija present a Continental Appointment Ceremony at Scandals Saloon at 9:30pm. The night will be hosted by the queen of Scandals Jessica Channing and honor Monica Siumpson and Jose Manuel Vega. Joe Posa and a host of friends and family present A celebration of life for Frank Ribaudo at Salvo’s at 5pm. Frank was a navy veteran, entrepreneur, HIV/AIDS Fundraiser, and hospitality visionary. Frank turned a back bay venue into a home base for generations of Boston’s LGBTQ+ community (Club Café Founder). When Frank and Joe moved to South Florida they became a huge part of our fabric, and I, for one, will miss seeing Franks smiling face that always lit up any room he was in. The South Florida Pride Bands is inviting musicians of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels to join the organization’s 41st season, marking an exciting new chapter under the leadership of Sara Cowley, the organization’s first female Artistic Director in its 40-year history. Whether you haven’t played your instrument in years, are looking to get back into music or are an experienced musician seeking a rewarding performance opportunity, South Florida Pride Bands welcomes LGBTQ+ musicians and allies alike. No audition is required, and instruments may be available for those who need one. The nonprofit performing arts organization includes a Concert Band, Jazz Band and Steel Band, with performances scheduled throughout South Florida from October 2026 through June 2027. Rehearsals begin: Concert Band: Wednesday, Aug. 12, 7 p.m.; Steel Band: Thursday, Aug. 13, 7 p.m.; Jazz Band: Tuesday, Aug. 18, 7:30 p.m. All rehearsals are conveniently located in Fort Lauderdale/Oakland Park.
