What happens when a RuPaul’s Drag Race alum dares you to take your comedy from the Midwest to the South? For comedians Michael Henry and Tim Murray, it became the premise of OutTV’s latest original series, Wish You Were Queer. The show takes the pair beyond the queer bubble of West Hollywood to explore LGBTQ life and culture in unexpected places.
Michael told Out Magazine, “We really wanted to see what life was like outside of New York and LA…People always think, oh, you have to go to New York, LA, Chicago, San Francisco to find a gay community, but no.”
The premiere kicks off with “the most successful businesswoman in the world,” Trixie Mattel, who greets them while doing businesswoman stuff, right before tossing her laptop into a pool. Though it’s all in good fun, Trixie is a real-life supporter of queer creators.
Tim shares, “She’s one of those who literally is just always championing others.”
Michael adds, “She’s been along with us on this journey the whole time.”
From Columbus, Ohio, to Pensacola, Florida, the duo found chosen families and thriving queer scenes in so-called “Middle America.” Tim fell in love with Louisville, while Michael felt “very seen” in Pensacola.
As for a possible season two? Tim wants tougher crowds; Michael jokes about performing in “a nude resort” or “a parking lot.” Until then, fans can watch season one of Wish You Were Queer on OutTV’s YouTube channel.
