The Hulu comedy series Mid-Century Modern — led by an all-star cast including Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, Nathan Lee Graham, and Linda Lavin — has been canceled after just one season, despite critical praise and a growing fanbase. Created by Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, directed by James Burrows, and produced by Ryan Murphy, the show explored the golden years of a trio of friends living together, while also celebrating chosen family and queer joy. In announcing the cancellation, Mutchnick shared on Instagram: “Ten great episodes… Not enough. But we loved making every single one of them. We’re gonna miss our very special show. Thanks to everyone who watched.”

The comments section quickly filled with heartfelt reactions. Actor Dan Bucatinsky wrote, “We became a family to create a TV show about a chosen family. And nobody can take that away from us. It was magical. And filled Linda Lavin with so much joy at the end of her life. This was a blessing on a blessing!”

Cheri Oteri added, “I loved working with you and this beautiful cast. Be proud in knowing you created something very special.”

Carson Kressley praised the series as “some amazing TV history nonetheless.”

Viewers have been equally vocal. One fan on Twitter wrote: “It was like a gay Golden Girls, something we very much needed at this time. This is so dumb! Definitely the kind of show that you had to let breathe and grow.”

Another said, “This sucks! One good gay show on television deserved a second season! This show is the gay Golden Girls. Television really treats gay men like garbage.”

Despite only one season, the series received four Primetime Emmy nominations in 2025 and brought visibility to LGBTQ+ storytelling with humor and heart. For many, the loss of Mid-Century Modern reflects a broader trend of queer shows being cut short, even when they find devoted audiences. For now, the show remains streaming on Hulu — a bittersweet reminder of what could have been, and a testament to the power of queer stories that resonate deeply, even if only for ten episodes.
