Enter a world of splendor and romance, of eye-popping excess, of glitz, grandeur and glory! A world where Bohemians and aristocrats rub elbows and revel in electrifying enchantment. Pop the champagne and prepare for the spectacular…Welcome to Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
Baz Luhrmann’s iconic film comes to life onstage, remixed in a new musical mash-up extravaganza. Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a theatrical celebration of Truth, Beauty, Freedom, and – above all – Love. Moulin Rouge! The Musical is more than a musical; it is a state of mind.

As in the film, Moulin Rouge! The Musical celebrates over 160 years of music – from Offenbach to Lady Gaga. The stage musical features many of the iconic songs from the movie and also includes recent hits released since the movie premiered 21 years ago.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical opened to critical acclaim at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in the summer of 2019 and reopened in September 2021 following the shutdown of Broadway due to the pandemic.
“Spectacular! Euphoric! In Moulin Rouge! The Musical, life is beautiful,” raves The New York Times. “Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a fabulous new musical. The high begins the instant you walk into the theatre,” said the New York Post. Entertainment Weekly concludes that “it’s easy to believe that Moulin Rouge! The Musical could run for 50 years.”
It was a pleasure to sit down with Rhys Carr (They/Them) for this exclusive Hotspots interview

At what age did you begin performing?
I started performing in 4th grade with my first musical, it was “101 Dalmatians.” That same year I did “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” in local theater and then I did shows for 6 or 7 years after that.
What was your first professional gig?
My first was through Clear Space Theater in Rehobeth Beach Delaware, and I was in “Jessus Christ Superstar,” “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Kinky Boots,” where I played Lola.
Moulin Rouge has taken Broadway by storm, is there additional pressure touring in this show?
I don’t think so. What I will say is that we are different performers from different backgrounds and that’s what’s beautiful about it.
This is your national tour debut, how exciting is it for you?
It’s really been wild. I have been with the tour about a year and a half now, and it’s been surreal. This, by far, is the longest I have been away from home, but what has been really gratifying is that I feel like I have matured a lot on this tour.

Other than this one, what has been your favorite role so far?
A few of my favorites were Lola in Kinky Boots, The Leading Player in Pippin, and Anatole in Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.
What’s your fantasy role (a role you haven’t played but would die to play)?
I would love to play many of the roles in Hadestown. Also, Audrey 2 in Little Shop of Horrors.
You are part of the LGBTQ+ community, are you single or married?
Single

What are you looking for in the perfect partner?
Someone who is not perfect, as I am not perfect. I love a sense of humor, a sense of empathy, and someone who can enjoy what I think is funny. Also, you must smell good!
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Effervescent, confident and soft.
What do you do for fun?
Its kind of hard on tour, but I have gotten into outdoorsy activities; including tubing, and hiking. I also have gotten into cooking a lot more. I also knit and I am learning how to crochet.

What should our readers expect from this touring company of “Moulin Rouge”?
I say expect to know a bunch of songs in the show, and there is a sing a long part at the end. Be prepared for a lot of stage magic and a lot of lights and a lot of sound. There are some incredible voices and dancing in this show. Also expect a lot of confetti, and the most beautiful costumes (the show won the TONY for Costuming). Be prepared for an amazing experience as it really is a treat for anyone to come and see it.
