The BBC has confirmed that the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas special has been canceled, while also announcing plans to put the long-running sci-fi series out to competitive tender. In a statement released Tuesday, the broadcaster said the decision was made jointly with returning showrunner Russell T Davies and production company Bad Wolf. Instead of producing a one-off special, the broadcaster said it would focus on investing in the future of the show, so that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory. The move follows weeks of speculation after Davies hinted on a podcast that he would not film new projects until 2027. The BBC also confirmed a Doctor Who animated series for CBeebies remains in production.
