How did you get started in the club world? I have always been a rampant clubber from a very tender age of 14. How did you get started in the club world?
I have always been a rampant clubber from a very tender age of 14. I also worked in a record store as a teenager, so my love of all things club started very early. I was working in London behind the bar of a bar/club called ‘The Back Passage’ (yes, really) and another DJ heard my tapes of my new records and suggested he teach me how to DJ. It’s all his fault.
What was your first residency?
I was offered Heaven, London and Warriors at Turnmills both in the same week in 1996. I started at Warriors first, just a few weeks before Heaven. My first Saturday night at Heaven was with Grace Jones. I couldn’t have been thrown more in at the deep end if they tried.
What are some of the major cities you have spun in?
I have been lucky enough to have played in Sydney, Beijing, Cape Town, Bangkok, New York, Rome, San Francisco, Sao Paulo amongst others. San Francisco and Sydney are the places I love the most.
What has been your favorite gig?
Pines Party on Fire Island and Sydney Mardi Gras/Harbour Party. They all hold very fond memories for myself. It’s hard to choose one out of those 3.
What separates you from other DJ’s??
My 12”.
You have done many remixes, what are some of your favorites and why?
Oh God. Deborah Cox ‘Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here’, ’cause it’s such a classic. Madonna ‘Dance 2nite’, ’cause I think its one of the best things I have ever done. Jerry Springer The Opera ‘I Just Wanna Dance’ for being so damn camp. Cher ‘Believe’, cause it was such a joy to work with her. I could go on all night.
How did you first become associated with Atlantis Vacations?
Rich Campbell was at Heaven one night, heard me spin and approached me there. He was the first person to bring me to the US. It’s all his fault, too.
How excited were you when you were asked to be the DJ behind the second Atlantis Dance CD?
I almost pee’d my pants. Especially getting the chance to work with Tommy Boy on the project. When we all decided it was a great idea to do a Peaktime CD and a T Dance CD, I really got stuck into making sure it was something that will never date and will be played to death in your CD player. Other then Djing, what do you like to do for fun? Drink wine, have sex. The usual.
What does the future hold for Wayne G?
A Lion’s Heart.
