What’s hot around town, what to do, where to go and the hottest toys and gifts!

Last Thursday evening, July 23rd, Fort Lauderdale’s Grand Resort, together with Hotspots Magazine, presented an evening of jazz under the stars featuring the Nicole Henry Soul Band of Miami. A few hundred people enjoyed a mystical evening of music and celebration featuring specialty hors d’oeuvres from some of  Fort Lauderdale’s finest restaurants, including: Alibi Catering, Galanga, HighLife Café, Mario’s Catalina Restaurant and Rosie’s Bar and Grill.  A very special thanks to everyone who made this evening so memorable, including Casey, Herb and their amazing staff at the Grand Resort and, of course, JD and his team at The Spa, event coordinator David Rost and 6 Star Entertainment and Marketing. In the end it was a picture perfect evening that raised almost $4,000, of which 100% will be donated to the following community services: GLCC, The Stonewall Library and Tuesday’s Angels. Once again, our community was inspired to unite in common cause to support these wonderful agencies. Thanks to everyone who helped make this memorable evening possible!

The Awakening of Spring premieres Friday, July 31 only on here! TV. Matthew (Javier Picayo) confesses to Michael (Jesse Lee Soffer) his fear that he will fail in school.  As the conversation shifts to the recent changes they have seen in their bodies, Matthew asks Michael for a written explanation of sexual reproduction. Later, Michael learns that Matthew was spotted sneaking into the faculty lounge.   His friends have a discussion and come to the consensus that Matthew will be caught and punished severely, as Matthew makes an entrance. Not only did Matthew successfully infiltrate the lounge, but he also discovered that he has been promoted to the next grade.  Matthew then makes a grim confession concerning how he would have reacted had he not been promoted. Soon after, Michael is in a wooded area looking at the stars and runs into Anne (Carrie Wiita).  Anne reveals something about her classmate’s relationship with her father and makes a startling request of Matthew, baiting him until he responds exactly the way she had hoped. When Anne returns home from her encounter with Michael, she learns that her sister has given birth to a boy. This prompts her to ask her mother to explain childbirth, but her mother avoids the conversation. Still reeling and dissatisfied in her search for the truth about human reproduction, Anne searches out Michael in a hayloft.  Michael begins making provocative sexual overtures towards Anne. At first Anne protests, but eventually succumbs to Michael’s advances.  Matthew receives a letter informing him that he will not be returned for the next school year. He heads into the woods and suddenly comes across Miriam, an old friend and now an artist’s model. The older, hardened Miriam flirts with Matthew. He declines her company and instead walks into the distance by himself. Meanwhile, Matthew’s father discovers the essay on sex and hands it over to the teachers. After conducting a handwriting comparison, it is determined that Michael has written the document.   Under the belief the essay may be linked with recent contentious events, Michael is expelled. Angered by news of the essay, Michael’s father, Mr. Gable (John Aniston) wants to send Michael to a reform school. Mrs. Gable (Constance Towers) defends her son’s right to explore and discuss the human body.  Mr. Gable proceeds to tell devastating evidence against Michael in regards to his recent encounter with Anne. Shocked, Mrs. Gable reluctantly concedes to her husband’s wishes. Once in the reformatory, Michael tries hard to avoid the sexual exploits of the other boys and plans his escape. At the same time, Anne’s mother, Mrs. Woodman (Victoria Tennant) has called a doctor to examine Anne, who has been feeling very ill and vomiting.  Anne is convinced that she is dying, but her mother now knows the truth about Anne’s condition.  Mrs. Woodman tells Anne that her health will improve and gives her medicine that she thinks will remedy the situation, only to see her plan tragically backfire. The climactic scene sees Michael escaping the reformatory and hiding in a graveyard.  He feels guilty and responsible for the plights of his friends.  There, he sees dramatic images which lead him to an epiphany about all of the recent events surrounding him and the true meaning of life.
