I’ve been going to the gym for five to six years now, and I work out four to five times a week. I think I’m pretty fit, but that Boot Camp class kicked my …” says Dr. Ken Moore with a big smile on his face, “I loved it!” He was referring to the new Boot Camp program at Island City Health and Fitness (ICHF) run by Certified Personal Trainer Ernesto Caballero. However, fitness training is not always about an ?ber-strenuous workout; walking on the treadmill with a light weight training routine will often yield the results you are after. And, this is the key to a sustained, healthy, lifestyle: What are the health and fitness goals you want to reach?
Regina Hunter came to ICHF in January this year. An overweight, always tired, poor-eating, binge-drinking lady, Regina’s goal was to lose weight and tone her body, as well as to simply become healthier. She took the plunge to enter the gym front doors and with her exuberant personality landed with nervous confidence in the arms of Certified Personal Trainer Jim Schaefer. Ten months later, Regina not only reached her short-term goal of dropping 20 pounds before her summer cruise, but has gone onto lose 45 pounds and eight more dress sizes! “I have so much more energy now. I still am bad from time to time; I love me some wings and beer! I just know now that in moderation and a good cardio routine, I can still lose weight. I’m learning to balance the good and bad things in my life.” Regina has found that a cardio and aerobic workout isn’t just walking on the treadmill and treading away on the StairMaster; Regina is often seen crunching away in Jim Haas’s Abs & Core classes and shaking her hips the Latin way in Cathie Bazner’s high energy Zumba classes. Regina’s new health and fitness goal is motivated by her winter cruise!
Suffering from Lupus, a chronic inflammatory disease, Shirley Wharton knew she had to do something about her weight and the additional pressure she was exerting on her joints. 17 dress sizes less and 47 pounds of weight shrunk from her frame, Shirley is religious about her cardio routines. Jumping on the stationary bicycle while watching the evening news, Shirley is sweating herself thinner at ICHF. She is now more aware of what she eats, and still allows for healthier ‘cheats’ to satisfy cravings; she still enjoys a fine wine, eating out with friends and all the other social events often inhibited by those fad diets. By incorporating exercise into her lifestyle, she has seen incredible changes in her body, all while enjoying life, food, and friends.
Not everyone’s goal is to lose weight; very often, one works out to gain muscle mass. Muscle weighs more than fat, and for those wanting to gain weight and tone, losing the fat and gaining the muscle is the goal. “Protein intake is a key to gain lean muscle mass. Throughout the day, and ideally through at least five meals a day, you should consume a gram to a gram and a half of protein per pound of body weight. A great and easy way to do this is through protein bars, shakes and other supplements,” advises Certified Personal Trainer Chuck Wilson. As only an expert can say, “Your body becomes catabolic after four hours and eats away at the muscle for energy. So, eat every two to four hours to maintain an anabolic state to burn fat; you’ll have a lean, mean, sexy machine before you know it!”
