After President Barack Obama’s amazing announcement on Wednesday, May 9, we were elated! His support of same-sex marriage will go down in history as it’s the first time a sitting president has ever made such a statement.
In an interview with ABC News, he said, “At a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.”
Obama said he was “disappointed” by Tuesday’s vote on the issue in North Carolina, which he described as discriminatory against gays and lesbians.
The president said he supports the concept of states deciding the issue on their own, reported ABC News.
He said his daughters, Malia and Sasha, have friends whose parents are same-sex couples and that “It wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”
This last statement drew ire from reality show star/Sarah’s spawn Bristol Palin, who thought that the President should know better than to listen to his children’s opinions.
“I guess we can be glad that Malia and Sasha aren’t younger, or perhaps today’s press conference might have been about appointing Dora the Explorer as Attorney General because of her success in stopping Swiper the Fox,” Palin wrote.
The former “Dancing With the Stars” contestant and plastic surgery enthusiast suggested on her blog that the Obama’s daughter’s views were inspired by “one too many episodes of ‘Glee’,” and that even though their friends had same-sex parents, “that’s not a reason to change thousands of years of thinking about marriage.”
When has too much “Glee” ever been a bad thing?
The most memorable part of the single mother’s blog was when said that “we know that in general kids do better growing up in a mother/father home.” Guess that doesn’t give much hope to poor baby Tripp.
Of course, many celebs took to their Twitter to rip Palin a new one, including The View’s Sherri Shepherd, our beloved Kathy Griffin, Glee’s Lea Michelle, Lo Bosworth of “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills” and most importantly, Jersey Shore’s J-Woww.
More opposition unsurprisingly came from Ann Coulter last week when she appeared on the Sean Hannity’s radio show. The conservative crazy challenged the political wisdom of the move, and said that while it might not help Obama, it won’t hurt him either. She said it just appeared to be “desperation” on his part.
Other haters came out against us right here in Florida. Not too surprisingly, Senator Marco Rubio stated that the left is using the gay marriage debate as an effort to divide the country and distract the attention away from President Obama’s issues with the economy.
Rubio said he believes in keeping the institution of marriage as being between one man and one woman and he added that people should not be “demonized for having that view.”
There have also been lots of positive responses on the President’s decision. Especially, it seems, from the wealthy. It was reported on CNN that Obama’s campaign raised $2 million dollars in donations in just the 24 hours following his announcement that he personally support’s same-sex marriage.
So, you see, the crazies aren’t going to put a damper on this momentous statement from our President. And besides, we have J-Woww on our side. . .what can go wrong?
