RuPaul-bannerWeek 8 of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5 had the remaining 7 contestants creating their own fragrance from a choice of scents, to design to the commercial. This seemed to me to be the hardest challenge for the girls as most of them seemed to not be able to pull the entire concept together. The only contestant not to have won a challenge, Alaska, broke her streak and won. Ivy and Alyssa (2nd week in a row) found themselves in the bottom 2 and in the end Ivy Winters sashayed away. She was a true pleasure to interview.

Ivy-WintersAt what age did female impersonation become an interest & how did you pick your name?

I was a clown for 8 years and always loved performing. The first time I saw drag, at the age of 18, I was hooked. That same year I started.

I always loved the name Ivy. My original name was Ivy West, but when I moved to New York I changed it to my real last name.

How many times did you apply to be on RPDR and how did it feel when you found out you got chosen?

This was my first season auditioning and I was ecstatic when I got chosen. I made it to the top 20 and then I got the call that I didn’t make. I was humble and thanked them for the opportunity and they said that they were just pulling my leg and I had made it. I was so excited!

Tell me about your RuPaul’s Drag Race experience?

It was the most stressful thing I have ever done, but also the most exciting.  The process filled me with a lot of emotions, but getting myself out there to millions of people is amazing. In the end I had a tremendous amount of fun.

Who do you want to win?

Jinx as she is definitely the one I made the closest friends with on the show. She is such a genuine person.

Ok, we all want to know about you and Jinx. Are you dating, etc?

No we are not dating. Watching the episode last night was the first time I found out she had a crush in me. We are just really good friends.

Tell me about the man behind Ivy Winters?

He is very similar to the drag persona. I am down to earth in and out of drag. I am very artsy, and love doing arts and crafts. I hate confrontation and drama and think there is no point in being negative.

How did Lady Bunny feel about you impersonating her?

She loved the portrayal, but she called me a skinny bitch. It was a lot of fun for me as we are friends and I see her on a weekly basis.

Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you.

Everything is out in the open about me

What’s ahead for Ivy Winters?

I am expanding my costume business as I love making outfits. Drag Race has naturally expanded that for me and I am forever grateful. Of course I will also perform all over the country.
