“Queen of Neo-Soul” Jill Scott Comes to Hollywood and St. Petersburg

Singer and actress Jill Scott was once called “the Queen of Neo-Soul” due to her cutting-edge innovation performing in the soul genre. Fifteen years and five albums later, the name has stuck, and the Queen lives up to her name with her most recent album release, Woman. To promote that album, Jill Scott has embarked on a nationwide tour, and two of those tour stops will be in Florida. She will be in Hollywood at Hard Rock Live on Saturday, August 8 at 8 p.m. (sold out), and in St. Petersburg at the Mahaffey Theater on Sunday, August 9 at 7 p.m.

Jill Scott was born and raised in Philadelphia. Originally a spoken word artist, she was discovered as a singer by Amir “Questlove” Thompson of the Philadelphia-based band The Roots. She released her first album, Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, in 2000. She earned a Grammy nomination for Best Female Vocal Performance for her work on that album.

Her following albums, Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 (2004) and The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3 (2007), won her three Grammy Awards, and were recorded as she began to pursue an acting career on the side. She was well-received as Sheila in the Tyler Perry films Why Did I Get Married? (2007) and Why Did I Get Married Too? (2010). She played Truvy in the 2012 all-black remake of the classic Steel Magnolias, and she starred with Anika Noni Rose in the HBO TV series The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. Her most recent music offering, Woman, is her first album in four years, and this current tour is the first time she’s visited Florida since March 2012.

Tickets are available for both Jill Scott concert dates. BJ The Chicago Kid will be the opening entertainment act for Jill Scott in Hollywood and in St. Petersburg. Ticket prices start at $55 (Hollywood) and $70.50 (St. Petersburg). Tickets can be bought by going straight to Jill Scott’s website at missjillscott.com.
