A Mississippi man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the killing of out gay University of Mississippi student Jimmie “Jay” Lee. Sheldon “Timothy” Herrington Jr., 25, entered the plea Monday, more than three years after Lee vanished on July 8, 2022. Lee, a beloved member of Oxford’s LGBTQ+ community and drag performer Jay Divaa, was 20. Herrington, who’d been secretly involved with Lee, became the prime suspect after messages showed he lured Lee to meet him. Lee’s remains were found this February.
