German Theologians, Nazi Resisters, and Pals May Have Been Something More

Eberhard Bethge (1909–2000) was a German theologian whose life was indelibly shaped by his relationship with theologian and ethicist Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a leader in the confessing church movement that opposed the Nazis. Though primarily remembered as Bonhoeffer’s biographer, modern scholarship has increasingly scrutinized the profound intimacy between the two men.

The hints of a homoerotic bond reside largely in their correspondence. Bethge was the primary recipient of Bonhoeffer’s prison letters, which contain language of intense devotion. They shared a bank account, exchanged twin gifts, and Bonhoeffer even included Bethge’s name alongside his own on Christmas cards—an unusual domestic conflation for the time.

While Bethge eventually married Bonhoeffer’s niece and maintained that his friendship with Bonhoeffer was a spiritual brotherhood, some scholars argue the relationship was the central emotional pivot of Bonhoeffer’s life. Whether the love was platonic or an unrequited romance, Bethge remained the faithful custodian of a legacy that redefined 20th-century theology.
