In Ohio, a queer motorcycle group is responding to a wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation by teaching community members how to safely handle firearms. Queers on Gears, through its Cleveland chapter, has been hosting firearm training sessions on a rural property outside Elyria. Held in a barn on a family farm, the classes are led by two transgender instructors and are designed as a safe, inclusive learning space.
According to The Buckeye Flame, the sessions have grown steadily over the past year, attracting many first-time participants. The organizer, Fifi, said that participants were happy and feeling comfortable, describing an environment where queer individuals could learn without fear.
Fifi said the idea emerged after returning to Ohio from Oregon and witnessing a shift in the political climate. Participants cite recent state actions, including restrictions on LGBTQ+ education and policies affecting transgender students, as motivation.
