New research published in January 2026 is highlighting how laws targeting LGBTQIA+ communities are affecting mental health beyond the legislative chambers.
In a qualitative study published in JAMA Network Open, it was found that quer adults across the United States perceive recent policies targeting their rights as harmful to mental health.
Researchers interviewed 61 adults in states that proposed or enacted measures such as gender-affirming care restrictions, sports bans, and limits on LGBTQ+ discussions in schools. Participants described three key impacts: chronic worry and hypervigilance, social isolation, and feelings of hopelessness and powerlessness. Many also reported strained relationships and community disconnection. The study found these effects are more severe for transgender and nonbinary people, youth, and those in marginalized or rural communities.
