The controversy stems from remarks made by TV announcer Charlie Brande during a nationally ranked men’s volleyball match between UC Irvine and CSUN. Brande reacted to Jordan Lucas celebrating a play with a brief, flamboyant gesture. Brande said, “I’m amazed Jordan Lucas hasn’t been popped by somebody…The antics he’s making under the net, it’s very distasteful.” Following criticism, the Big West Conference issued a statement on Twitter addressing the incident. ‘

It said, “We stand with CSUN men’s volleyball student-athlete Jordan Lucas and all student-athletes in their rights to compete, celebrate and express themselves in a way that is authentic to them, providing they are not engaging in unsporting behavior.” While condemning the remarks, the conference stopped short of directly naming or disciplining Brande.

The incident has drawn widespread reaction on social media, with some noting that similar celebrations by straight athletes often go unchallenged. It has sparked a broader conversation about inclusion and self-expression in college sports and sports in general.
