According to Out Sports report, Iran’s soccer federation is seeking guarantees from FIFA regarding its national team’s participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, including a request that only officially recognized national flags be allowed inside stadiums during its matches. The demands, published through the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s official website and state media channels, come just weeks before the tournament begins across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
If enforced, the request could affect the visibility of Pride rainbow flags during Iran’s Group G match against Egypt on June 26 at Seattle’s Lumen Field. The game has already been designated a “Pride Match” by Seattle’s local organizing committee. FIFA has not publicly responded to the federation’s requests, which also include visa assurances for players, coaches, and officials, along with enhanced security measures for the team.
The request from Iran has sparked discussion within the sports community. Despite the growing concerns, Pride-themed artwork and merchandise tied to the Seattle match remain part of the city’s World Cup campaign, including a Pride Match Day scarf featuring artwork by artist Kelly Bjork. Currently, there is no indication that Pride scarves or rainbow symbols will be banned at the June 26 match.
