It was a pleasure to sit down with Jonah Barricklo (Peter pan) for this exclusive Hotspots interview:
At what age did you begin performing and how did it happen?
I grew up as part of a performing family. My dad works in the theater and my parents put me in dance classes as a little kid. I got roped into a production of Annie, by my sister when I was young, and I realized I really loved it. I went to many different performing classes/schools when I was young before going to college to get a BFA in musical theater.
What was your first professional gig?
Technically I was 10 and I did regional production of “Matzo and Miracles.” I played a grandson of a family of whose Bubbie spins the tale of Passover.
When did you know performing would be your career?
I think it was some point in high school as I went to a public arts high school, both in NYC and Boston. Midway through High School I realized how much I enjoyed performing and I wanted to keep doing it, so I decided it would be my career and that’s why I majored in Musical Theater in College. I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else.
Other than this show, what has been your favorite role so far?
Most recently I played a sailor in “Anything Goes” which is full of tap dancing, which is rare these days. Since I love tap it was so much fun to tap dance for an entire show.
What’s your fantasy role (a role you haven’t played but would die to play)?
There are so many, but I think I would love to play Riff in West Side Story.
What’s the best thing about touring?
The travel as I really never saw a lot of the country growing up, so now I have gotten to see so much of the country in the last year and a half, it’s amazing.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Thoughtful, hard-working, and excited.
What do you do for fun?
I finally returned to reading for my own enjoyment. I also love photography and I am traveling with a couple cameras. I love taking photos of the different cities I am in.
How exciting is it to play Peter Pan?
It’s pretty amazing, as he is so full of energy and wonder and curiosity that’s it’s a lot of fun to step into his shoes and look at the world a little differently.
I love the Flying in the show, how fun is that?
Just as magical as it looks. It’s exhilarating, and it’s so unique to Peter Pan.
Finally, what should our readers expect from this touring company of, “Peter Pan”
I think you should expect a really fun night that really anyone can enjoy. I think we have also done a really good job adjusting the production to a modern audience so everyone can enjoy the show.
