Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says his government will move quickly to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other European Union countries, following landmark rulings from the Court of Justice of the European Union and Poland’s Supreme Administrative Court. The rulings stem from a case involving a married same-sex couple whose 2018 German marriage certificate was denied registration in Poland.

In March, Poland’s top administrative court ordered the marriage entered into the national registry. This made it the country’s first official recognition of a same-sex marriage. Speaking before a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Tusk apologized for the years of rejection and humiliation faced by LGBTQ couples. He said, “[This is] a matter of human dignity: the right to happiness, the right to equal treatment by the state…I would like to apologise to all those who, for many, many years, felt rejected and humiliated. For many years, the state has failed the test.”
