What’s HOT! South Florida, October 14, 2010

On Thursday I went to see “Young Frankenstein” at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and this is a fun musical, especially for those of you who are big fans of the movie like I am. Who can forget the incredibly talented movie cast including Gene Wilder, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle, Terri Garr and Madeline Kahn (one of my favorite comedienne’s of all time). This wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend follows bright young Dr. Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen) as he attempts to create a monster-but not without scary and hilarious complications.

If I have convinced you to see this upbeat, fun show, then hurry up because it only runs through the 17th. To order tickets go to BrowardCenter.org

On Friday, Hotspots Publisher Peter Clark and Reece Darham of Island City Health and Fitness were in Tampa to attend the monthly GAYBOR meeting. Later they stopped by to take in the finals of the Miss US of A at Large Pageant at The Honey Pot, where 30 states were represented. They were blown away by the caliber of the talent. Congratulations to all of the contestants. Friday night, The Stable presented the 2nd annual Miss Korn Queen Pageant starring the Lady Fancy and last year’s winner, Miss Candy Cornhole-Cox. As it was last year, this pageant was hysterical. If you missed it put on your things to do next year! Saturday and Sunday was the 3rd annual Bubba’s Country Fair at Scandals Saloon. Starting from 3 pm to the evening hours this was 2 days of nonstop, good ole fashion fun, games, rides and entertainment (even our publisher was tempted to ride the bull). Congratulations to Ken, Lloyd and their entire staff on another successful year.

Sunday I headed up to Orlando for the annual Orlando Pride and Parade and once again it was a huge success. Thousands and thousands of people (the exact number hasn’t been released yet) came to Lake Eola Park for this incredible event. A big congratulations to the entire board of Come out with Pride for a very organized, detail oriented and superior event! I can’t wait to go back next year. After pride and a disco nap it was off the world famous Parliament House for the official After Pride T Dance and the property was wall to wall people. The Footlight Theatre was so packed I could barely get up the steps and then I had to squint to see the show because I was on the back wall. Thank God my camera has zoom! The show hosted by Darcel Stevens was, as usual, fabulous. All I have to say is it’s Sassy Devine’s world and we are just living in it. This entertainer always takes my breath away… she is going to be huge… remember I predicted that!

Congratulations to Don, Susan and the entire P-House staff for another fabulous T-Dance!

Longtime Alibi bartender Scot Newell showed off his creativity and cocktail mixing skills recently at a national bartender challenge in Palm Springs, California. The Tourism Board of Palm Springs, LOGO Television and Gay.com held a national cocktail challenge where bartenders that work in gay bars had to create a signature cocktail, a martini and a shot. Local competitions were held in Seattle, West Hollywood, San Diego, Las Vegas, Dallas, Denver, Chicago and Fort Lauderdale. On September 12th, the local winners were all flown out to Palm Springs and they competed head to head on national television (look for it on LOGO). Scot wowed the crowds with his “Picnic In Three Glasses” that consisted of a “Palm-egranate” Lemonade, a S’mores Shot and the clincher … a “BLT” Martini that included a Bacon flavored vodka (strange but true)! We are thrilled to announce that Newell took the winning spot! Congratulation, Scot!

Argentine director Marco Berger repurposes the conventions of a Shakespeare-styled comedy in his clever, witty and poetic feature film debut. Bruno is dumped by his girlfriend; behind a calm, indifferent expression, his mind plans a cold, sweet vengeance. He befriends her new boyfriend Pablo, with the idea of eroding the couple, either by introducing Pablo to another woman or by seducing him himself. Thus emerges “Plan B,” a perilous romantic journey that calls his own sexuality into question. “Plan B” stars Damiain Canduci, Lucas Ferraro, Manuel Vignau, Mercedes Quinteros and it’s 103 minute run time is in Spanish with English subtitles. The DVD is available for purchase on October 26th for the sale price of only $14.95 at WolfeVideo.com
