The seventh eliminated contestant to sashay away on LOGO TVs RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 3 is Shangela. Here is what she had to say.
At what age did female impersonation become an interest?
The pursuit to work in the art of drag came strongly only 2 years ago, but I have always been a fan of drag and female entertainers. In the 10th grade I dressed up as Tina Turner and sang “Rolling Down The River” for a Huckleberry Finn project.
How did you pick your name?
I didn’t. I was choreographing a “Single Ladies” number for 3 guys doing a charity event. One guy got sick and they asked me to step in. I had to borrow everything to get into drag. I was running late for the club and they called and asked me what my drag name is, which I didn’t have so I said put down a name and the rest is history.
How did you go about getting on “RuPauls Drag Race.” Tell me about the experience?
I sent in a video for the 2nd season and when I decided I wanted to go back, I auditioned just like every other queen. I was very thankful they chose me and to compete again against some of America’s best.
Who do you want to win?
I am really rooting for Yara Sofia and Alexis Mateo. They are good hearted people and great entertainers and would be a great representative for America’s Next Drag Superstar.
Tell me about the man behind Shangela?
Well, he has got a big afro bush and his name is DJ Pierce. I have always been an entertainer and I am so thankful to pursue my dream full-time. I love being out there and making a connection with people. I also love to see people smile and laugh and if I can bring that, Halleloo!
Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you.
I am pretty much an open book, but I think people would be surprised to know I am still single. However, this year I am going to be more focused on trying to find a relationship.
What’s ahead for Shangela?
Big, big things. I am so excited right now. I just landed my first NBC pilot as a series regular. Michael Patrick King of “Sex and the City” fame wrote and is directing the series and it stars Don Johnson, Ellen Barkin and Mario Cantone. Can you imagine how excited I am!
