On Thursday, Adams Interiors presented the 3rd annual Evening of Elegance to benefit the Hospice by the Sea Foundation. The event featured live music by Atlantis, magician Stephan, complimentary hors d’oeuvres, open bar, fabulous raffles, and a silent and live auction. On Thursday, Adams Interiors presented the 3rd annual Evening of Elegance to benefit the Hospice by the Sea Foundation. There was so much going on this past Saturday that it was impossible for me to cover it all, so we split up the staff to try and cover everything. In Fort Lauderdale the South Florida Wind Ensemble took the Amatiro theatre of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts by storm with their sold out concert “Beyond Borders, The Music of Our World.” Also that night, the Pride Center and Equality Park presented a benefit entitled “An Evening in Paradise” at the beautiful home of Jim Walker. There was a silent auction with fabulous items as well as some incredible speakers all to benefit our wonderful Pride Center. In Miami the Miami Beach’s LGBT Visitor Center sponsored by MetLife, hosted a visual art exhibition, titled “This Art is So Gay,” with the artist reception coinciding with Sleepless Night. Afterwards we continued the Sleepless Night party by heading over to The Palace for some performances by Noel Leon, Erika Norell and Tiffany Fantasia. I then headed back to Fort Lauderdale to attend 2 events.

First I poped my head into the Ramrod for their monthly Pig Dance which brings out all the leather aficionados, bears and all their admirers and then I headed to The Manor for my friend, Viva Mirage’s (Miss Noche Latina 2011), 7 year anniversary of doing female impersonation. The Latin Lounge and Patio were even more packed then they normally are and this just goes to show you how loved Viva is. Congrats Viva!

From award-winning gay documentary duo Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Party Monster) comes the groundbreaking portrait of Chaz Bono’s life as a transgender man which has touched hearts across America with its personal exploration of courage and strength. Through interviews with friends and family (including his mother, Cher) the film presents an illuminating story that everyone should see. Growing up as Sonny and Cher’s adorable golden-haired daughter in a body he felt wasn’t his own was a crucible it took years to transcend.

Now, as he undertakes gender reassignment, Chaz bravely decides to share the process on camera. Becoming Chaz invites us along on Chaz’s remarkable journey of transformation. Filmmakers Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato were given near total access to Bono as he deals with the physical and emotional challenges of transitioning (as well as the complex legal ramifications) in the documentary Becoming Chaz.

The film also includes interviews with Chaz’s mother Cher, his longtime girlfriend Jennifer Elia, and his stepmother Mary Bono Mack, all of whom have their own ways of dealing with profound changes in someone they love. Becoming Chaz received its world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Becoming Chaz was nominated for 3 Emmys including Nonfiction Special, Directing, and Picture Editing and is an official selection of Oprah Winfrey’s Documentary Club. The DVD sells for $16.95 and is available Nov. 29.
