Bi-Partisan support for the Voice For Equality Award

The 2012 Equality Florida Greater Orlando Gala will honor Orange County Comptroller Martha Haynie on November 2, 8-10PM. The Voice For Equality Award will be presented to Ms. Haynie in recognition of her fearless commitment to recognizing and protecting all families. By consistently bringing the truth to light about the importance of having a Domestic Partner Registry in Orange County, Ms. Haynie helped lead the effort to provide important protections to loving couples who are either unmarried or who’s marriages are not currently recognized in Florida.

This year’s Equality Florida Greater Orlando Gala will kick off in a posh new location; The MEZZ in the Sanctuary Building, 100 South Eola Drive #200, downtown Orlando. The gala is hosted by community and faith leaders, joined this year by a large group of bi-partisan elected officials. The annual gala provides an opportunity for the community to learn more about where our state is in the fight for full equality for Florida’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community while showing their support for the work of Equality Florida Institute, the state’s largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s.

The event is the culmination of a yearlong effort by Equality Florida’s Greater Orlando Steering Committee, chaired by Danny Humphress. The gala is brought to you by the 2012 Host Committee which includes many of Greater Orlando’s movers and shakers. This year’s gala will feature an open bar and delicious catering courtesy of John Michael Catering and Special Events.

The program will include a “State of the State” address by executive director, Nadine Smith and a presentation of the Voice for Equality Award to Ms. Haynie, who has held the position of County Comptroller as a county-wide elected Republican for more than 20 years. The selection of Ms. Haynie highlights the history of bi-partisan support for LGBT civil rights in Orange County. The Gala also features an impressive Honorary Host Committee of current and former elected officials from both parties who are standing up for LGBT equality and making it clear that, increasingly, LGBT equality is not a partisan issue. More and more Floridians are realizing that equality is good for our community and it’s also good for the economy and for business.
