It was a pleasure to sit down with Nelson Sanchez Leemet who is not only in the show but a member of the LGBTQ community!

At what age did you begin skating and how did it happen?

I was born in DR and  we never have wintrer there, so I was not exposed to skating. When I was 10, my mom mwanted to move back to her home town in Canada, and during my first winter winter the beautiful pond ouside of  our house froze over and I begged my mom for skates….she got me soccer skates, and I started. A few months later she took me to an arena to watch a skating show and I fell in love with skating.

What was the first time you were paid to skate?

Disney On Ice was my first paid gig, and  that was when I was 17.

When did you realize that skating would be your career?

When I first competed everything was not to serious, but when I got better it became to much pressure to compete. However, I loved performing, so I applied to Disney on Ice and when they hired me I knew skating would be my career.

What is your favorite part about performing?

Whenever I go out there, especially as Woody, the audience is so into it, I love watching the kids faces.

Do you enjoy traveling around the world and what do you do in the different cities you visit?

I do love travelling a lot, and we usually have 2 to 3 days off, and so I like to take time to experience all the cultures and restaurants, etc. I love taking pics of new places.

Who are your mentors in the skating world and why?

My coach was great to me and she is my mentor in the skating world, However, my mom is also such a big support that she is my life mentor.

What are your future professional goal sin the skating world?

Honestly, I am very satisfied where I am today and I see myself doing this for a very long time.

Have you thought about what you will do once your skating career ends?

I always enjoyed choreographing, so I am hopeful to get a career choreographing skating.

I know you are part of our LGBT community, do you have a boyfriend? If so, how did you meet? If not, what is your perfect guy and date?

I do not have a boyfriend at the moment. I believe that someone with a kind heart can encourage you to grow in life and be your best self, so that’s what I am looking for. A perfect date would be to take me skating.

What do you do for fun?

Honestly I enjoy cooking, and I try to do that on my dfays off. My dad is a chef so I try, but I am no where near as good as him.
