The changes in the guidelines are made following complaints from some members about a trans woman patron’s conduct in shared changing areas. The Stonestown Family YMCA has introduced new signage outlining expectations around nudity, privacy, and appropriate use of shared spaces.
The updated rules state that nudity should be “discreet, limited, and brief,” and allowed only while actively showering. Members are also instructed to maintain personal space and respect others’ privacy in common areas.
The YMCA has not publicly detailed the specific incident that prompted the changes. The revised guidelines also include instructions on supervision requirements for young children. The policy remains aligned with California law, allowing people to use facilities consistent with their gender identity.
