Don’t Just Survive, Thrive!
Daily life has certainly changed over these past three months. A lot of people have serious and legitimate concerns. The ever- present threat of the Covid19 virus, worry over job security and financial volatility can certainly keep us up at night. Remember, that it is not a bad thing to feel over-whelmed and frightened. The first step toward feeling healthy and empowered once again is to take care of yourself and then reach out to those you love with a positive plan for moving forward. Here are some practical cognitive strategies that will help you to thrive in times like these!
Maintain an active daily routine. When you are worried and depressed, it is easy to withdraw, shut down and stay in bed all day. Instead, set a regular time to rise and shine. Have your clothes laid out, drink your coffee and eat a healthy breakfast. Delay checking and returning pesky e-mails and texts until you feel upbeat and energized. Incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Many who exercise first thing in the morning before work report less anxiety, increased energy and a brighter mood all day long. If you cannot work out in the AM, then work it into your day somehow- it will elevate your mood and boost your metabolism anytime of the day. If you are working from home, whenever possible try not to work after hours. Fill your day with enjoyable and satisfying tasks, walk the dog, prepare a healthy dinner, un-wind with music, meditation or a favorite TV show. Schedule a regular time to retire and stick to a regiment that allows you to relax gradually so that you can enjoy at least eight hours of un-interrupted slumber.
No matter what, never let negative thoughts control you. Let go of hurtful people and events from your past. Stop checking the news every 5 minutes ruminating over negative stories and bleak headlines. As far as the future goes, worrying and fretting can do nothing to make things turn out the way you desire. Stay grounded positively in the present. Make good choices, treat people well and try to find something good in everybody and everything.
Treat yourself well. Work, relationships and the daily grind can take their toll on you. Instead of falling into a negative, depressed cycle, try always to have things to look forward to in life. Reaching out to others is tough these days, but it helps if you keep a steady stream of positive people in your life. Just remember to be one yourself when someone else needs a caring friend or a strong shoulder.
