Galleria Fort Lauderdale will host a special ribbon cutting ceremony to launch The Poppy Project Pop-Up Living Garden in support of Henderson Behavioral Health (HBH) in collaboration with the USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD28) Support Committee at 4:30 p.m. The public is invited to join City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis and community leaders with singer Zachary Kopelman, as they unveil this public art initiative designed to honor veterans while raising awareness and funds for critical mental health services. Adding to the installation, will be “Soldier Stories,” an exclusive exhibition by award-winning artist Marilyn Johansen honoring veterans and the military. The Firefighters Benevolent of Davie, in partnership with Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, will present the second annual Rock The Climb 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at The Guitar Hotel commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. This powerful tribute honors the heroes who lost their lives, supports survivors, and uplifts families forever impacted by the tragedy. The second annual memorial climb brings together first responders, veterans and community members to honor the lives lost on Sept. 11 and recognize the courage and sacrifice of those who responded in the aftermath of the attacks. Participants will ascend 110 stories, representing the height of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers, in remembrance of the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives that day. Rock The Climb will begin with an opening ceremony at 8:30am, followed by a moment of silence at 8:46am, marking the time the first plane struck the World Trade Center. The memorial stair climb will begin at 9:30am. Registration is $75 in advance and $100 on the day of the event. Registration includes participation in the stair climb, access to DAER Dayclub, a finisher medal, commemorative T-shirt, food and beverage, and a challenge coin. Following the climb, participants are invited to an after-party at DAER Dayclub featuring artist Ry Rivers, along with a raffle, food, drinks and music. Empire Stage Theater (1140 N. Flagler Dr. Ft. Lauderdale) presents “Southern Baptist Sissies” through October 4. From the Creator of “Sordid Lives,” and based in a small town in Texas, four boys named Mark, Benny, TJ, and Andrew retell their experiences of discovering their homosexuality while being raised in a conservative Baptist church. The play is a satirical comedy and a serious exploration of what it means to be gay. The NSU Art Museum presents Creativity Exploration Luminous Layers from noon to 1:30pm. Inspired by the artwork of Marina Kappos, create a layered and luminous composition with repeated forms, shifting imagery, and subtle vibrations to create a sense of movement and connection. Participants will explore themes of resonance, reflection, and interconnectedness through cut paper collage with intentional layering and visual rhythm. Creativity Exploration adult workshops promote the benefits of material exploration and the mind-to-body experience. “Research suggests that experiencing art and creativity, even for a few minutes a day, has tangible effects on our mental and physical health” (New York Times). In addition to producing a sense of well-being, sessions expand participants’ perceptions of forms, while increasing brain connectivity through visual and cognitive stimulation. The workshop is led by educator Lark Keeler, a specialist in mindfulness education.
