Last Wednesday a benefit was held at Monkey Business for my friend Eduardo Nunez, Mr. Carolina Continental, to send him to Mr. Continental in Chicago this Labor Day Weekend. Seen and performing there were Latrice Royale, Misty Eyez, Amanda West, Athena, T-Lo and many more. Afterwards I headed over to the Voodoo Lounge for the grand opening of their Whip It Wednesdays. The night is hosted by Daisy Deadpetals and deejayed by Daisy and Misha. After a soft opening a few weeks ago, it is packing in the late night crowd every Wednesday. On Friday night a few of the Hotspots staff headed to the Tampa Bay area, checked in to the Hampton Inn and Suites Ybor and headed straight to Hamburger Mary’s Tampa for dinner and the Leigh Shannon show. This was the first time Leigh brought her Illusions show to the Tampa Hamburger Mary’s and it went over extremely well…

In March 2010, a hate group called the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) came to Richmond, Virginia to protest local LGBT and Jewish organizations. Instead of fighting the WBC’s hate with more anger, four local moms came together and used the visit as an opportunity to spread kindness through the community. In less than a week, they founded Pennies in Protest, raised over $14,000, and gave it directly to the targeted organizations. Those moms have now set up a “how-to” website that teaches anyone, anywhere how to do what they did: PenniesInProtest.com. The WBC’s website, which is GodHatesFags.com (yes, really) has a full schedule of where the WBC plans to visit next and which organizations they plan to protest. Anyone is free to use the name, anyone is free to use the materials on their website, including sample letters, press releases, tweets, etc. They even have a photograph of the thank you note they sent to the WBC on behalf of the GLBT and Jewish organizations who got all the money. They say the thank you note was a very fun and satisfying part of the process!
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has awarded The Pride Center at Equality Park a $1.5 million, five-year program grant which began on August 1, 2010. The funding will be used to develop and implement HIV Prevention Services for men who have sex with men (MSM) groups in which there may be a high risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV infection regardless of race or ethnicity. “The Pride Center was able to show the Health Department meaningful results with its current HIV prevention programs,” Jorge Gardela, Senior Health Outreach Manager, said in a statement. “As a result, CDC funding will enable the agency to continue its important work in the community on a much larger scale.” The CDC grant will give The Pride Center the ability to expand on-going efforts and incorporate the CDC’s Health and Community Services Program (HCSP): Counseling Testing and Referral Services, RESPECT Intervention for Behavioral Change, and Comprehensive Risk Counseling Services into the highest risk segment of the MSM population.
