The history of Crunch Gym began in a basement-level aerobics studio in New York City’s East Village circa 1989. Their mission was to make exercise fun. Accomplishing this mission meant doing away with traditional ideas of what “serious workouts” are. Crunch started offering classes like hip-hop aerobics and co-ed action wrestling, among others. Everyone loved these classes, and soon lots of people were coming to experience Crunch’s unconventional take on traditional fitness. Twenty-five years later, Crunch still believes in making serious exercise fun by fusing fitness and entertainment and holding true to a philosophy of “no judgments.”
It was a pleasure to sit down with the general manager of Crunch Oakland Park to find out more about this gym.
What made you decide to become a franchise owner and open up a Crunch in Oakland Park?
Crunch offers a brand that is highly respected in the industry. It’s also flexible enough for franchise owners to be present to offer the hands-on customer service that is lacking in today’s competitive health club marketplace.
Tell me about your fitness background.
As a lifelong athlete, fitness has been at the center of my life since I was eight years old. I have worked in the fitness industry since 2001 and have done everything from club cleaning and maintenance to executive level leadership. Mostly, I have been a passionate advocate for people changing their lives through fitness programming and direction.
What are the membership dues?
We have three membership types: $9.95, $19.95 or $29.95 per month.
What other special features does Crunch have?
Crunch offers a fully equipped free weight area and over 80 pieces of cardio equipment but what sets us apart is our world-class personal training. Our trainers offer program design, nutritional support and the motivation to help you meet your fitness goals. Additionally, Crunch offers over 60 group fitness classes per week including “Crunch Ride,” which is our cycling class. We have a fully appointed functional training area for Olympic and power training, including indoor turf for explosive conditioning. Child care, tanning and hydro massage round out our offerings and truly make us the best value in Florida.
Why should I join Crunch as opposed to any other gym?
Features and benefits are all fine and good but at the end of the day, none of this separates one club brand from the other. What makes us different is cleanliness and members’ service. We pride ourselves in the fact that we offer a Ritz-Carlton experience at a Motel 6 price.
